It was time for Namma Bengaluru to host blogger’s meet by DuPont Nutrition & Health. The agenda was simple , to showcase and promote the importance of Probiotics in daily diet , in sync with our Prime Minister’s #FitIndia – healthier India movement. The invitees included some of top fashion , food and parenting bloggers and influencers from the city as top experts shared their views on how Probiotics help better our lives.

It is a known fact that these living microorganisms , when ingested, provide numerous health benefits. These are mostly Bacteria, but yes certain types of yeasts can also usefully function as Probiotics.

Sources of Probiotics

You can get Probiotics from foods prepared by bacterial fermentation like yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut, tempeh , kimchi , as well as supplements.

However let me caution you that Probiotics should not be confused with Prebiotics, which are dietary fibers that help feed the friendly bacteria already in your gut.

Health Benefits 

There are over dozens of different probiotic bacteria offer health benefits, that include Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium, the most common groups with different species, and each species has many strains.

However not all Probiotics are the same as they address different health conditions through different strains of the bacteria. For example, one strain may fight against cavity-causing organisms in our mouths and don’t need to survive a trip through our guts.Therefore, choosing the right type or types of probiotic is essential. There are some supplements that are known as broad-spectrum probiotics or multi-probiotics that combine different species in the same product.

Most commonly known benefits of them is they are helpful in treatment or prevention of irritable bowel syndrome ,diarrhoea , ulcerative colitis ,crohn’s disease ,H.pylori (the cause of ulcers) ,recurrence of bladder cancer , vaginal infections, urinary tract infections, infection of the digestive tract caused by Clostridium difficile ,eczema in children among others.

The Bangalore Event 

Held at Chancery pavilion located in the central business district of Bangalore, the guests and invitees were welcomed by Reena Choudhury, Communications Specialist, South Asia, DuPont Nutrition & Health.

It was followed by a very interesting and informative presentation on the importance of Probiotics dietary requirement by Prateek Nag, Regional Product Manager.

We also had the privilege of listening to Dr. Anders Henriksson , Principal Application Specialist at DuPont Nutrition & Health in Australia. He is known for supporting DuPont products and research projects in the area of Dairy, Health and Nutrition throughout the Asia Pacific region including India. He stressed upon the science and benefits of Probiotics in human diet.

The perception of Probiotics was very well presented by Dr. Kiran Punjabi, Sales Manager-Dietary Supplements, South Asia and was followed by Dr. Priyanka Rohatgi, Chief Clinical Nutritionist and HOD-Dept. of Nutrition and Dietetics who spoke about Probiotics on food and medicine.

Lastly there was Q&A Session and a informative quiz for the audience with chocolates for answering them correctly , followed by a sumptuous networking lunch by the pool.

Summary 

It is high time we should understand the importance of Probiotics in our daily lives. There are several foods and supplements that can help our cause.
