Read Time:3 Minute, 37 Second

Sangiovese, a beautiful looking purple berry skin coloured grape variety that was not a part of the Australian land till the 1970s found its way to lure the native’s heart gradually. They came to Australia with Penfolds and Montrose who planted the variety in Barossa and Mudgee respectively.

However, it was Mark Lloyd who is known to create an interest in the variety. He planted Sangiovese vines in 1985. The variety took its time to shine in Australia with the collective efforts of winemakers across regions like Barossa, McLaren Vale, King Valley, and Beechworth. Over time, some of them have produced pretty exciting wines.

Regions like Riverland, Hunter Valley, McLaren Vale and King Valley are considered to be the best Sangiovese wine producers in Australia. This grape variety wine has flavors of tart cherry, fig, strawberry and red plum to offer. The additional flavors that make it worth appreciating are smoke, thyme, dried roses, leather, clay, roasted pepper, oregano and brick. All of these lead up to a dry, acidic finish.
