Rendezvous with MasterChef India Season-2 Runners up Shazia Khan

Chef Shazia Khan needs no introduction in the culinary world. MasterChef India Runner Up Season 2 and now a celebrity Chef , Food show presenter and writer ,Shazia Khan is a household name now .A self learner , she loves to innovate and experiment while cooking. Some of her choicest recipes are part of her cookbook ‘What’s on the Menu’ that was published last year. Apart from her love for cooking, she is part of family-run education business and is a member of the board of management at Delhi Public School in Bangalore and Mysore.

Yesterday , I was invited to the food tasting event at The Oberoi, Bangalore where she demystified the pleasures of enjoying the  ‘nouvelle cuisine’ in the comfort of home.

“The event hosted by TTK Prestige, showcased Chef Shazia demonstrating the ease of recreating Michelin star quality food at home and reiterating the importance of sourcing fresh local produce and quality ingredients for fine tasting food.”

After her culinary show, I had a short conversation with her.The excerpts from the same are below:

Q. What does cooking means to you?

Cooking makes me Super excited.I love to plate my dishes elegantly.For me, it is like a fun activity. Even at midnight , I can cook food for my loved ones.”It is like an Love affair” ( she says it laughingly)

Q. Take us back in time, how old were you when you had first cooking experience.  

I was 9 years old when I started cooking at home.My first dish was fresh fruit Custard that I prepared without any help. My family was always worried about me cooking then.

Q. Chef Sanjeev Kapoor has always praised you and described you as “epitome of grace under pressure”. Whta do you say about it.

Chef Sanjeev Kapoor has been always been very encouraging to me since I met him at the Masterchef India contest.

Q. How often you cook at home ?

As a mother of two foodie sons , I cook almost every second day for them. I have pampered them with good food and they love fancy dinners with me.

Q. You just mentioned that your kids are foodies.Do they too plan to become Chef once they grow up?

My younger son who’s 12 years old , is very fond of cooking. Perhaps he will join a Culinary school in Singapore once he grow up.

Q. What cuisine interests you most ?

I love creating new recipes usually the traditional Indian ones with modern twist. Old flavors in new style.It is difficult  for me to single out one as my favorite recipe. But my kids are fond of Italian cuisine. I love hosting people and like to get appreciation for my dishes.

Q. What are your immediate future plans

Currently, I am working on my own Culinary School in Bangalore. It is slated to open in August 2017 at Jayanagar in southern Bangalore. Apart from the education , there will be lot of Masterclasses by the well known Chefs .

Especially for this event Chef Shazia has curated modern menu with fusion dishes like dukkah crusted paneer with creamy beetroot, the brinjal affair, grilled figs with almond crumble and vanilla mousse, chilly mutton sliders, Cuban chicken skewers and specially concocted grape juice puchka shots.
