The coastal Karnataka or the greater Mangalore region , that includes udupi , has a distinct cuisine that is a melting pot of cuisines and cultures from its various inhabitants like the Mangalorean Catholics, Saraswath Brahmins, Beary Muslims and Bunts among others.

With ingredients like coconut , ginger, garlic , chili , tamarind and curry leaves , this coastal cuisine is usually spicy and is majorly inspired by the south Indian cuisine in a uniquely delicious way. The staple food here is rice , with fish being part of regular meal for non vegetarian mangloreans.

Situated in Indiranagar , the coastal cuisine restaurant inspired by the town by same name ,Maravanthe is known for serving homely managlorean style food. Let me list down Must haves from Mangalorean cuisine , we had during our recent visit. We started with Kokum juice and Sol kadi , the digestive drink made with Kokum or Aamsol and coconut milk.

The traditional, delicious, spicy, hot and tangy Prawns Sukka , one of must haves here , is also an absolute favourite of the people from the region and we tried it with neer dosa and rice , just as they do.Soon followed by other dish Squid fry, made with quick and spicy mangalorean salt and chilli paste marinade called Meet Mirsang.

We also tried the Kane Rawa fry ,the Lady fish marinated in fiery red chilli paste, coated in semolina and fried to its golden best.

One of my favourite is their Chicken Ghee roast , a manglorean spicy delicacy from Kundapur with lots of ghee, lots of ghee-roasted spices, is must have for me during any manglorean lunch or dinner.

Kori Roti with chicken curry another soul combination for most mangaloreans. Prepared meticulously by drying the sheets made from rice paste that gives them the hard and crispy texture , this is savoured best dipped in chicken curry.

The desserts spread here , we felt , was prepared in a homely manner that delighted our palate. The Raggi Manni and the coconut pudding were simply outstanding. The famed Gudbud style ice cream sundae too here was quite appealing to our sweet tooth.
