Le Cirque – the name synonymous with the culinary finesse in Bangalore, was gracious enough to invite me to experience the specially crafted tasting menu fortnight ago. My excitement was boundless as this was my maiden visit to the magnificent gastronomical extravaganza.

Let’s back into time as it all began in 1974, when the famed restaurateur, Sirio Maccioni realized his dream  called “Le Cirque”, now a New York landmark. This culinary phenomenon is globally and also has its Indian presence in Mumbai, New Delhi and Bangalore.

When you enter the restaurant , its royal and grand interiors with subtle elegant shades of beige, ebony and ochre , well complimented with huge beautiful and majestic chandeliers , will simply awe you with its magnificence. They also have the Al fresco option with scenic views, and the private dining , where we all were seated for the special tasting.

We were welcomed by the Executive Chef Zafar Ali, Leela Palace, who has been in the hospitality industry for nearly 2 decades. He headed the Leela Palace kitchen for the Nasscom event that hosted German Chancellor Angela Merkel and our Prime minister Narendra Modi in 2015. During my tete e tete with the Chef , I came to know that he believes maintaining the authenticity of the cuisine. The delicate French gourmet flavours and the hearty aromas and zesty Italian cuisine are the hallmark of this famed place.

Our culinary experience began with an amuse-bouche portion of mozzarella, artichoke puree with dash of black truffle oil. The harmony of flavors in the truffle & mozzarella were truly stimulating my appetite for the future courses.

The Appetiser course, was their signature Le Cirque Salad, an exotic assortment of Arugula leaves, lollo rosso lettuce, segmented orange, berries, mint, beets, figs,Celery, carrot, toasted sunflower seeds, lemon and oregano dressing. Refreshing and ambrosial beginning indeed !

After the excellent salad, the Shrimp Fritter Corn Soup followed, that was poured in front of us. The velvety textured & veloute like consistency , it was flavourful and the Shrimp Fritters compliment it quite well.

Next to arrive at our table was Risotto , one of my Italian favourite. I could feel the goodness of black truffle pesto with the burrata cheese in my mouth in every bite. Certainly my favourite here, black truffle risotto I would highly recommend here.

Some of us requested the chef for Le Cirque’s iconic pasta dish – Spaghetti Primavera, the one that has been making waves for 4 decades now. It was made famous creation at Le Cirque New York in 1977 , that Craig Claiborne and Pierre Franey called it “by far, the most talked-about dish in Manhattan.” Certainly it was an experience in itself for me to relish this historic NYC dish.

After the legendary spaghetti dish, I opted for the Chicken Diable , a pan seared chicken breast served with Dijon mustard sauce, inexpensive morel mushroom, potato, shallots drizzled with chicken jus.

Seen below is the Paupiette – a halibut enclosed in a potato crust with stewed leek and topped with a  Rocca di Frassinello red wine sauce , one of the other options on the menu.

The Crème Brûlée is French for “burnt cream.” prepared in a large, flat or oval ramekin, 1 inch in height and about 4 to 5 inches in diameter usually , was first prepared in NYC and not France. Might sound childish , but it’s thrilling for me to break the perfectly caramelised sugar top and scoop the dessert beneath and relish it.

THE VERDICT

Dining at Le Cirque Bangalore for me has been an experience of a lifetime. Exemplary service and excellent wine lists complement the culinary experience here and relishing the iconic dishes like the Spaghetti Primavera and the Crème Brûlée that originated from the legendary restaurant brand is a moment of celebration for any gourmand.
