Read Time:4 Minute, 1 Second

“Chinese cuisine is among the most loved in India. And it all started with the arrival of Chinese settlements in the eastern part of India, the erstwhile Calcutta. It was here in the China Town area, the fusion of Chinese dishes with Indian palate started to evolve in the early 20th century”

15027445_10154711542213540_8920742345837691638_nIn last decade, Bangalore has rapidly evolved into a culinery melting pot of India.Recently I was invited for the new menu tasting at Hunan, the most adored Chinese restaurant of Bangalore. It is situated in centrally in the food district of Bangalore, Koramangla.Besides this one, Hunan has another outlet at BEL road and three Hunan Express counters in city.

h1The recipient of “Times Food Awards” four times in row, Hunan is known for “its flavor, fresh aroma and authenticity”. It was in 2010 , when Jagdish Menda, after returning from his hospitality stint in USA, decided to turn restaurateur with an idea called HUNAN. He with the help of Executive Chef Pema Takchung has made it one of best Chinese food destination of the Garden City.

Recently, I was invited to try their select new menu along with some food lovers and friends.“The new menu focussed on healthy , gluten free dishes with no MSG”, I was told. It has been planned keeping lot of south-eastern and pan-asian flavors apart from the ones from mainland china.

h2

As a part of the Chinese custom, the subtly sweet and highly fragrant Jasmine Tea was served along with the meal.

h18

The Asian Flavour Chicken Salad provided us the perfect beginning with refreshing tastes with interesting mix of shredded chicken and vegetables, tossed with Vinaigrette and peanut butter.Must have when you visit them next time.

h4

Next was the Thai Seafood and Rice Vermicelli salad in a delectable lime and sweet chill dressing , the absolute delight with near fresh squids, prawns and fish and instantly reminded me of Thai culinary journey earlier this year.

h3

It was followed by  Hong Kong Style Steamed Seer Fish in a ginger coriander broth from their Steamed section,.Healthy and delicious with delicate, I would perhaps love to have it with some boiled rice.

h8

One of the intresting offering from the menu was the Asian Style Stuffed Tofu with Chicken. The big soft cubes of Tofu that were scooped in the middle and stuffed with pan asian chicken stuffing , a dish I had never tried before.

h7

For those who are looking for Meal by Itself, there was The Chicken Stew with Black Wood Ear Mushrooms, served with Sticky rice.Must have if you are fond of the sublime and delightful oriental flavors.

h13

The shredded Pork Bejing style cooked in sweet bean paste was not much exciting as it lacked the crispiness and there was nothing novel about it. Chef took my feedback and assured me to work on it.

h6

The other starter that was served to us, Chicken Hot Basil with finely chopped chicken cooked with bird eye chilli , basil and garlic in a lettuce cup. Innovatively flavorsome, I must confess.

h5

For the vegetarians , the menu had The Salt and Pepper silken Tofu , tossed mildly flavored and healthy tofu dish and the Fried Soft corn Corn chili Pepper. I would prefer former over the later here, if I have to chose one.

h9

h12

Though Sugarcane skewered Chicken was also offered as part of the preview, I personally have not been able to develop taste for this combination.

h10

Among the Must haves, was the Fried Chili Prawn with Tamarind Sauce. With fresh red chili, garlic & ginger , coriander and fish sauce, there was perfect wedding of various flavors ,thus making it delectably desirable for me.

h11

The mains with Thai elements, Raw Mango Chili fish has some fresh Thai elements inculcated in form of shredded raw mango and sauces served with stir friend fish.

h15

We were also served some refreshing mock-tails to compliment our food journey.Seen below is refreshing mint cooler.

h16

Finally we ended our food tasting with the two of the Hunan’s best desserts, the Red Velvet Cake and the Tres Leches. For those who may not be aware, Hunan has been my first choice for Red Velvet Cake in Bangalore.

The menu , I felt, is very exciting. It has lot of fresh elements from oriental cuisine. Some of the new offerings are truly delectable and would be able to entice the palate of most customers.
