The advent of December ,marks the beginning of the Christmas month ,bringing sense of joy & festivities around the world.

Though the traditions vary from communities to communities and country to country ,the spirit remains the same. While most of the world including India celebrates its winter, my friends in Australia and New Zealand enjoy it during summer time. The lighting of decorated Christmas tree, carols singing, food and wine are part of the festivities.

Built meticulously by 9 chefs from the Sheraton family , it took them 8 days of hard work and love , and ingredients that included the 650 kg of flour, 340 kg of sugar , 125 kg glucose and 150 kg of honey ,3 kg each of marshmallows and jujubes to create this Christmas marvel for the city. These were then decorated by the in-house macaroons and cookies. Really splendid effort indeed. The magnificent Xmas tree too was installed and decorated along the side.

History of Gingerbread Houses

Before we go further, let’s know how the tradition of making decorated gingerbread houses started. According to some sources, it was in Germany in the early 1800s ,when the first gingerbread houses were created by the bakers, inspired from well-known Grimm’s fairy tale “Hansel and Gretel” in which the two abandoned kids found an edible house made of bread with sugar decorations in the forest. It was later bought to USA by the German immigrants. However other sources, claim that the tradition existed long ago before the fairy tale.

GBH & Tree Lighting Ceremony

Coming back to the ceremony at Sheraton, the kids were invited to decorate ginger bread house with array of decorations. There was a sense of happiness , quite evident on their innocent faces.
